Logged into NVC

For those following our adoption timeline, I wanted to share that I called NVC today and was told we were logged in yesterday! That means it took 10 days from Philly to being logged in (with one holiday thrown in there). They told me it takes 3-5 business days to get our file sent, which would mean by monday the latest....but I have seen that it often takes just 48 hours so we will see.

1) Homestudy -DONE
2) File I600A with immigration (done)
3) get fingerprinted for I600A - DONE
4) Get referral!!!!!! (which can happen anytime after Cecelia, the executive director of our placement agency, Love the Children) - DONE
5) receive legals for the specific child - DONE
6) File I600 with immigration -DONE
7) I600 approval goes to National Visa Center - DONE
8) Receive Emmigration Permit (permission from the Korean government for my child to leave the county) -- I will NOT know when this happens!
9.) Embassy requests packet of info from agency to complete visa (P3)
10) Get visa interview
11) Get our travel call

Hi Jackie,
You don't know me, but I got to this blog from the Holt Korea bb where I am also a fairly new member (fiddle_girl, HSTK 9/12/2008 Holt/Holt NJ). I love reading blogs of others waiting for their children! :-) Anyway, if you don't mind, I would like to ask you a few things. First, I have a childhood friend who lives in Whitehall and she and her husband are considering adopting from Korea as well. I told her that I had heard some great things about Pearl Buck International. She researched them and really had her heart set on them. They say they will not be ready to start the process until November. Anyway, I just happened to go onto PB's site and saw that they are not accepting new apps for Korea accept for returning Korea families, just like HI started doing in October. I haven't told her yet because I don't want to discourage her without having some good news to go with it. I see that you are with LTC. I had mentioned them to her before, but two things about them bugged me when I was researching agencies for myself. First, do they really expect that people can come up with the entire amount for the adoption without taking out a loan of any kind? Who can do that? Does home equity or a 401K loan count with this restriction, loan from family? The other thing is that they say it is preferable for one member of the couple to commit to staying home with the baby for a year. I have talked to her and I don't think she can do that. She would take maternity of course, and she only works part-time now, 3 days a week. Would that be good enough? Thanks for your help. BTW, I've been living with wheat (but not gluten) intolerance for many years, about a decade and can give you recipes and tips for your daughter if you want. Let me know. You can PM me on the Holt bb if you want.

Hi Christina,

I am sorry that LTC has bugged you. They are definitely strict with their rules for their program, but that is why they are so quick with referrals, because they are picky. My only suggestion to your friend would be to call LTC and speak with Cecelia directly, she is the only one that can answer your questions! Sorry I can't be of more help!

Thanks for the advice on the gluten free diet. She is also casein free and soon to be soy free, so many just 'gluten free" recipes are out for us, but thanks for offering!!!!

-Jackie

Hi Jackie...just read your post on the LTC board and thought I'd reply to Christina as well.

We had also looked into Pearl Buck at first. After feeling very discouraged that they were not taking anymore applications and having our hearts set on Korea, Jackie came to my rescue and told me about LTC.

I also was concerned about the whole "no loans, all the money in savings" thing, as my husband and I certainly don't have that much set aside. I spoke to Cecelia about it, and she basically just said to explain our individual situation with our social worker when the time came. She didn't say anything discouraging at all or tell me not to apply. So, as Jackie suggested, I'd tell her to call Cecelia as well and see what she says.

I didn't inquire about their rule of one parent staying home the first year, so I can't be of any help on that question.

I hope it all works out for your friend :)
